Miramare Castle sits 8 kilometers northwest of Trieste. You can reach it several ways from the city center, but first you need to get to Trieste itself.

For instructions check our post “How to Get to Miramare Castle from Trieste“.

Flights and Paperwork

From the USA

First off, there are no direct flights to Trieste from the United States. You’re going to have a layover somewhere in Europe. Total travel time usually clocks in between 12 and 14 hours, sometimes more.

Prices are all over the map. Looking at round-trip tickets, you might find something from the East Coast (New York, Boston) in the $450 to $600 range, but that’s optimistic. From the West Coast, it’ll probably be more, maybe $500 to $800. These numbers are just ballpark figures, though; they change constantly with the season and how far out you book. The main airlines on these routes are what you’d expect: ITA Airways, Lufthansa, and others that partner with them for the final leg into Trieste.

Trieste’s airport (TRS) is on the smaller side but it’s growing. In April 2024, Ryanair made it a new base. This was a big deal. That year, for the first time, the airport handled over a million passengers—1.3 million, to be exact.

From the United Kingdom

It’s a simpler story from the UK, but you still might not fly direct. Ryanair does offer non-stop flights from London Stansted. If you don’t take that one, you’ll have a connection, and the trip will stretch to 6 or 8 hours. Fares can be as low as £30 if you get lucky, but can easily climb to over £300, depending on when you book and travel.

Travel Documents & Entry

For US Citizens:

You don’t need a visa for tourist stays in Italy up to 90 days. The important thing is your passport: it must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. A six-month validity is the safer bet.

There’s a new system coming, called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). It was supposed to start sooner, but now it’s slated for the last quarter of 2026. It’s not a visa, more like the ESTA for the US. You’ll fill out an online form, pay a fee—which they recently hiked to €20—and get an authorization that’s valid for three years. We’ll all know more closer to the time.

And if your flight happens to connect through the UK? As a US citizen just passing through, you shouldn’t need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

For UK Citizens:

No visa is required for you either. British passport holders can stay in Italy and the wider Schengen Zone for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Just keep an eye on that 90-day count if you’re visiting multiple Schengen countries on the same trip. Overstaying can lead to fines or a ban. ETIAS won’t apply to you.

Getting Here from the Airport

Okay, so you’ve landed at Trieste Airport (TRS). The castle is about 30 kilometers away, give or take, depending on the route. You have a few ways to get here.

By Bus

This is probably the most straightforward option. Look for the APT Gorizia bus, line G51. It runs hourly from the airport and heads toward Trieste’s city center, but it makes a stop at Grignano/Miramare, which is where you want to get off. The whole trip takes about 45 minutes. It’s cheap, too—a ticket should only set you back €3 or €4. From the bus stop, you have a walk. It’s maybe 15 minutes through the park to get to the castle itself.

You could also take that same bus all the way to Trieste Centrale, the main train station, and then hop on another bus or a train from there. But why bother with the extra step?

By Train

The airport has a train station. This option is a bit more involved. There isn’t a direct train to the castle’s own station, Miramare. You have to take a train to a town called Monfalcone first, then switch to a regional train heading for Miramare. The total journey takes over an hour. Prices vary wildly, from €3 to nearly €20, depending on the train you end up on. It works, but the bus is simpler.

By Taxi or Private Hire

This is the fastest way, for sure. A taxi will get you from the airport to the castle in about 30 minutes. It will also cost you—expect a fare in the neighborhood of €60 to €75. Private transfer services are also a thing; you book them ahead of time, and the price is usually comparable to a taxi.

By Rental Car

If you want your own wheels, all the major rental companies are at the airport—Hertz, Avis, Europcar, the usual suspects. Prices for an economy car seem to start around €30 a day, but that’s a big “it depends.” Time of year is a huge factor. July is expensive; February is cheap. Anyway, if you’re driving, you just follow the signs for Trieste and then Miramare. There’s a pay-and-display parking lot near the main park entrance. It’s not huge, so keep that in mind.
